What happens when heavy monsoon rains fall in Amritsar?
Summer 2013 was very rainy in India. When we arrived in Amritsar, it had already been raining all morning. Here is a short video of street flooding in Amritsar, as seen from the cab.
What do some pilgrims do when they collect holy water?
Did you know that the Ganges River is a holy site? In Varanasi, many people believe the water is very holy. Pilgrims from everywhere come to dip in or gather the holy waters of the Ganges River. Here is a short video of some triumphant Shiva worshipers, walking home with their holy water.
What is Qutub Minar?
The Qutub Minar is located in Old Delhi. It was built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak who took possession of Delhi in 1206. The tower is a very tall red sandstone tower, which stands to a height of 72.5 meters. It's covered with detailed carvings and verses from the Qur'an. The Qutub Minar is the first monument built by a Muslim ruler in India. I took this video because a photo would not be enough to show just how tall is this tower.
What is the Sikh's holiest site?
In Amritsar, we saw the Golden Temple. This is the holiest temple for people of the Sikh faith. It's really beautiful. This short video clip only shows the entrance. It was raining that morning, and we were about to enter the temple. You can hear the prayers.
What's it like to walk in Old Delhi?
The streets in the old section of Delhi are crowded and narrow. The sights, sounds, and smells are both overwhelming and awesome. Here is a short video clip of us trying to walk down one street. Listen to the traffic, and try to count the different ways people use transportation in this very crowded city.
